Best UK to Europe travel adapter

Travelling from the UK to mainland Europe means swapping a Type G plug for Type C, E or F. Here is exactly what fits where, when a plain adapter is enough, and the adapters worth packing.

Which plug fits where

Socket types and voltage across the UK and Europe
RegionSocket typeMains
United Kingdom & IrelandType G230V / 50Hz
France, Belgium, Poland, CzechiaType E (C compatible)230V / 50Hz
Germany, Spain, Netherlands, NordicsType F Schuko (C compatible)230V / 50Hz
ItalyType L (plus C and F)230V / 50Hz
SwitzerlandType J (C compatible)230V / 50Hz

Because the whole region runs at 220–240V, a UK phone or laptop charger works normally in Europe once the plug shape is solved. You are buying a shape adapter, not a voltage converter.

Buy a universal adapter if…

UK to Europe adapter questions

Do I need a travel adapter from the UK to Europe?

Yes. The UK uses the three-pin Type G socket, while mainland Europe uses Type C, E and F sockets. A UK plug will not physically fit a European socket, so you need a UK to Europe travel adapter even though the voltage is compatible.

Is a converter needed as well as an adapter?

For phones, tablets, laptops and USB chargers, no. The UK runs at 230V and mainland Europe at 220–240V, and almost all modern chargers are rated 100–240V. Only high-draw heating appliances such as some hair tools may need a voltage converter — check the label on the device.

Which plug type does Europe use?

Most of mainland Europe uses Type C two-pin plugs, with Type E sockets common in France, Belgium and Poland, and Type F (Schuko) common in Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Scandinavia. A single Europlug adapter fits Type C, E and F sockets. Italy and Switzerland also have their own variants, so a universal adapter is safer for multi-country trips.

Should I buy an adapter or a European-plug charger?

If you only carry USB devices, a fast GaN charger with a European plug is lighter and safer than stacking a UK charger on top of an adapter. Buy an adapter if you also need to power UK appliances or share a single wall socket with travel companions.
